Pain Management Options

Rogue Valley Pain is serving patients in the Rogue Valley and Southern Oregon, including Medford, Grants Pass and Ashland areas.  Dr. Wruck offers effective treatment options, therapies and pain management solutions and alternatives. Discover the benefits of conservative pain management achieved through physical medicine, injection therapy and rehabilitation.

Pain Management Our Approach

We concentrate on our approach to the best interest of our patients with conservative pain management measures, which aim to treat pain with minimal use of medications and focuses on non-narcotic alternatives. It includes non-narcotic medications like over-the-counter pain relievers, physical medicine with therapeutic exercises, OMT, ultrasound-guided injections, trigger point therapy, and regenerative therapy. The goal is to alleviate pain effectively while considering the patient's overall well-being and reducing the risk of medication-related complications. This approach promotes better outcomes and safer pain treatment experiences.

Non-narcotic Medication

Non-narcotic Medication Options

Oral NSAIDs, muscle relaxants, and neuropathic pain medications are fairly effective for minor to moderate levels of pain, including nerve and muscle pain, as well as some types of chronic pain.

A pain management specialist will review your pain history and any previous therapies attempted to relieve pain. If you are an appropriate candidate for prescription medication, your pain management specialist will devise a regimen that is appropriate for you.

Some types of medication that a pain specialist may prescribe are:

  • NSAID’s (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) - They are a type of analgesic (pain reliever) that works on reducing the body’s inflammatory responses without steroids.
  • Muscle Relaxants - A medication that is used to treat strains, sprains, and spasms. As the name states, they relax tight muscles and are successfully used to treat fibromyalgia
  • Anticonvulsant Medication - Anti seizure medicine that can help ease back pain, migraine pain and nerve pain. They block the transmission of pain signals to the brain.
  • Corticosteroids - Medication that helps control pain and provides relief from areas that are inflamed and swollen.

Opioid Medications

Medication Options

As a healthcare facility, we prioritize a conservative approach to pain management, and our preference is to avoid the use of narcotics whenever possible. We firmly believe in the importance of patient well-being and strive to provide the highest level of care while minimizing potential risks and side effects associated with these type of medications. We advocate for minimizing/eliminating the use of stronger medications for pain management whenever possible due to their potential for dependency and adverse effects. Instead, we strongly encourage exploring alternative medications and therapies that have shown efficacy in pain relief without the risk of addiction.

We are committed to tailoring individualized treatment plans, which may include very low dosage regimes of medications when necessary. We encourage patients to collaborate with us in exploring these alternative options.

Trigger Point Injections

Trigger Point Injections

Trigger point injections (TPI) offer significant benefits for patients suffering from muscle pain and tension. By targeting specific trigger points with the injection of anesthetics or medications, TPI provides rapid pain relief and relaxation of the affected muscle. This minimally invasive procedure can effectively alleviate chronic pain, improve range of motion, and enhance overall physical function, enabling patients to resume their daily activities with increased comfort and mobility.

TPI's localized approach reduces the need for systemic medications, thus minimizing potential side effects and promoting a more focused and efficient pain management strategy.

Ultrasound-Guided Injections

Discover the benefits of ultrasound-guided injections, combining precise medication delivery both for medications such as corticosteroids, viscus supplementation, & analgesics as well as products used for regenerative therapy. Using real-time imaging, this cutting-edge technique allows targeted administration of medications, reducing side effects while enhancing pain relief.

This type of approach facilitates optimal placement of procedures such as PRP and Prolotherapy, accelerating tissue repair and promoting natural healing. Embrace this non-surgical, minimally invasive solution for musculoskeletal issues, experiencing reduced pain and quicker recovery while avoiding risks associated with invasive procedures.

Ultrasound-Guided Nerve Hydrodissection Treatment

Ultrasound-Guided Nerve Hydrodissection therapy is an advanced pain management technique that effectively addresses chronic pain conditions. By using ultrasound imaging to visualize affected nerves, this procedure allows for precise and targeted administration of a hydromechanical solution, which reduces inflammation and releases nerve entrapments. This minimally invasive and drug-free approach offers patients a viable alternative to conventional treatments, promoting faster recovery and long-term pain relief. The utilization of cutting-edge medical advancements ensures a high standard of care and helps improve the quality of life for individuals suffering from chronic pain conditions.

Nerve Block Procedures

Nerve Block Procedures

Nerve block injections have emerged as a highly effective treatment for managing pain. These minimally invasive procedures involve the targeted injection of medication near specific nerves responsible for transmitting pain signals. By blocking these nerve pathways, patients experience significant relief from discomfort without the need for invasive surgeries or prolonged medication use. Although our clinic offers nerve block injections for various conditions, we understand that some cases may require more specialized treatments. In such instances, we are dedicated to collaborating with reputable outside clinics for procedures such as epidural steroid injections, facet joint injections, selective nerve root blocks, and radiofrequency nerve ablations, which can be useful for treating chronic pain.

PENS (Percutaneous Electro Neurostimulation)

BIOWAVE PENS (Percutaneous Electro Neurostimulation) therapy can help the patient lower their overall pain ranges.  The Biowave System (Biowave Corporation, Norwalk, CT) introduces two premixed high frequency wave forms (feed signals) through a percutaneous needle implant electrode placed on the skin opposite the pain site (feed electrode). The electric field contains a

The electric field contains a low-frequency component (beat frequency) equal to the difference between the feed signals. The feed signals pass through the body to a second percutaneous needle implant electrode at the treatment site (pain site electrode). The feed signals mix, yielding an electric field equivalent to the beat frequency component, which has shown to interrupt transmission of pain impulses by preventing action potential propagation along pain fibers. This technology is used for treating chronic, acute or postsurgical pain.
